Narrative Theories:
Levi-Strauss and Binary Opposition - narrative tension is based on opposition or conflict this can be as simple as two characters fighting but more often functions an ideological level e.g. old vs young, black vs white, boys vs girls, good vs evil, rich vs poor, authority vs weakness
Propp Theory - analysed plot to identify narrative - 8 key character types every single story:
- Hero- quest ends up love interest Chris
- Villain - goes against hero whole family
- Dispatcher - sets hero on quest rose
- Donor - helps hero sometimes has magical powers or object that will help them
- Princess - prize for the hero, hero deserves her must overcome task and end up happily ever after Chris
- Her father - rewards hero father of princess
- False hero - takes credit actions of hero try’s marry princess Rose
- The helper - someway helps hero on their mission rod
Todorov Theory - basic structure to any story follows 5 different cycles

Action and enigma codes - Roland Barthes
In order to drive a genre or narrative you have to have
Action code - what will happen next - she falls over will he catch her genre hybridity
Enigma - the audience question why why is he going down street alone at night why is she hypnotising him
Rick Altman - genre and audience pleasures
Any genre offers audience a set of pleasures
Emotional pleasures - how does the text make u feel e.g. happy sad
Visceral pleasures - gut response action e.g. excitement, fear and laughter
Intellectual pleasures - does it make audience think
